Mitchell Park Domes, Milwaukee

August 30, 2016

A couple of weeks ago we visited "The Domes"—officially, the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory—in Milwaukee. Since I'd been away from my own garden for more than a week by then, I was eager to have a little green time.

The original conservatory was built in 1898 and looked like this:

(I'm pretty charmed by any garden under glass, so, yes, I took a picture of a picture of the old conservatory. Everything in front of the black barrier cord is real, though.)

In the 1950s, when the conservatory had become unsafe and not worth repairing, it was torn down and replaced by the three current greenhouses known, for obvious reasons, as The Domes.

Now, alas, the Domes have become unsafe, and the Desert Dome and the Tropical Dome are closed for repairs. This didn't bother me, though, because the members of my Tyndale editorial team gave me the wonderful farewell gift of a member in the American Horticultural Society, which got us into the Domes for free; no need to worry about getting our money's worth. And the third dome—the one that is still open—is the Show Dome, which hosts changing plantings focused on a theme. It's like a horticultural theme party! What could be better? (Admittedly, Steve wasn't as excited as I was, but gardens and theme parties are high on my list of Good Things in Life. I even have Pinterest boards dedicated to them.)

Me, delighted. Steve, not so much.
In honor of the 2016 Olympics, the current theme in the Show Dome is "Summer on Olympus." Three for three: gardens, themes, and Greek mythology—I love them all!

Can you match these Greek gods, goddesses, and monsters with their statues? Sometimes the statue alone may not tell you, but the plants around it will. I've included one sign as a hint. (Answers at the end of the post.) (I spent wasted a lot of time trying to format the pics so you wouldn't have to scroll up and down to see the list every time, but to no avail. Sorry.)

And just so I don't end on a totally nerdy note, here are two more photos that are not quiz related.

Answers:
a. (3) Poseidon, god of the sea, with his trident
b. (6) Dionysus, god of wine, with grapes
c. (5) The Minotaur in his maze (There was a little Theseus at the beginning of the maze, but he didn't show up in the photo.)
d. (2) Athena, goddess of war and wisdom (which strikes me as a very odd combination), in her helmet and with the olive tree she gave to Athens
e. (1) Zeus, but I have no idea why he is with pillars or what hint there is to his identity other than his beard
f. (7) Hades with mint (see the sign hint)
g. (8) Medusa with her snaky hair
f. (4) Pan, the goat-legged god of nature, playing his pipes
